Only initiated sisters may posses anything with the crest printed on it.The sailboat is our national mascot, which symbolizes our ever forward movement. Sailboats also represent grace and beauty. We got our mascot by way of Robbie Page, for whom our philanthropy was founded. Our jewel of choice is the pearl. The pearl has special meaning that we symbolize along with our sisterhood, and also is part of our badge. Our flower is the Purple Violet. It has remained our flower since our founding in 1898. Our History
In 1898, eight strong, independent, and courageous women looked at their lives, college experience, and hopes for the future and sought to make more of themselves. These women shared a special bond of sisterhood from the earliest days, and hoped to pass this on to woman in the future. These women were to be the founders of our sisterhood, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and founded something greater then they could have imagined from the start. Our eight founders, Margaret Lee Batten, Louise Marie Davis, Martha Trent Featherston, Isabella Merrick, Sallie Jackson Michie, Lelia Scott, Elizabeth Watkins and Lucy Wright envisioned a sisterhood of high conduct, strong character, and above all, friendship to last a lifetime. They vowed these things to each other with our motto, Faithful Until Death.
What started at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia has grown to a national sorority of one hundred and eight national collegiate chapters, with eighty-nine national and international alumnae chapters. The world has changed since our founding, and Sigma has changed right along with it. In 1951 Tri-Sigma became a member of the National Panhellenic Council. Our national headquarters, the Mabel Lee Walton house, was acquired in 1963 in Woodstock, Virginia. Since our founding, Tri-Sigma has initiated over 100,000 women.
Our founders were not content watching from the sideline. During Sigmas first 10 years, huge strides were taken with the establishment of additional collegiate chapters and the meetings of the entire membership at conventions. The publication of The Triangle, Sigmas newsletter, standardizing initiation for new members and the creation of a program to celebrate Founders Day became three ways that Tri Sigma distinguished itself on the national level. They hoped to make much of themselves and to make an impact. They set about our sisterhood with this mission: “to promote a perpetual bond of friendship, to develop strong womanly character, and to inspire high standards of ethical conduct.”
Our values, faith, hope, love, power, and wisdom, are a guiding force for what be plan to accomplish as individual women, and as a sisterhood. With all of this in mind, these women officially founded Sigma Sigma Sigma on April 20, 1898. Over one hundred years later Tri-Sigma still holds these values close at heart. The growth and change that has occurred throughout the years has continued to stay true to the ideals of friendship espoused by the eight founding sisters of Tri Sigma. We look to the future, always developing our sisterhood, and celebrating our successes.
